All plants need water and sunlight to survive.
With that in mind, why do you think some of these prairie plants have grown?
Why have others died or gone dormant?
Do you think there might be other factors aside from water and sunlight that can cause these changes?

In this photosphere from September, you can see that some of the flowers and grasses have started to die or go dormant.
Why do you think this has happened while others are still alive?

In this photosphere, the sun is low enough in the sky that you can see the line between the sun and the shade.
Compare the illuminated area versus the shaded area. What do you notice?
What do you wonder?

Many of the grasses and flowers here are native to Iowa.
Have you seen any of these grasses or flowers in other areas?

Prairies are complex ecosystems consisting of plants and animals like insects, small mammals and other animals.
What animals do you imagine live in this prairie?
What might you look for in order to find evidence of these animals?

Prairies are typically areas dominated by grasses, wildflowers and are without trees.
Can you see the edge of the prairie here?

This is a photosphere of that same prairie after a month.
What do you notice that has changed?
Does it look like some grasses or flowers have gone away?
Do you see anything new?

This prairie has experienced change in temperature, humidity and sunlight since the last photosphere.
How do you think the weather has impacted the growth and death of some of the prairie grasses and flowers?

This prairie is in a rather small area.
What challenges do you think might occur in maintaining a prairie in a small area?
What benefits might there be in maintaining a prairie in a small area?

This prairie is in the height of its blooming season. There are beautiful purple, white and yellow flowers.
How do you think the amount of flowers compares from year to year?
htmlText_CCA90023_F8AC_B788_41B8_42EDE79AD400.html =
This prairie is newly reconstructed. You can tell because there is not much diversity amongst the plant species that are growing here.
What do you think the naturalists who are reconstructing this prairie can do to increase the diversity?

With most of the grasses and flowers being dormant in this photosphere, you can see that the grasses grow in tufts rather than spread over the whole landscape.
Why do you think prairie grasses tend to grow in this way rather than covering the ground like lawn grass?

You can see that both the prairie grasses and the trees have entered a period of dormancy, where they appear to have died but are just in a sort of hibernation, like some bears.
How do you think that the dormancy of the prairie plants compares to the dormancy of trees?
