Tree Roots and Erosion

This image shows tree roots that would normally be underground but have been exposed due to erosion.

Location
Council Bluffs, IA

Driving Question

  • How did the tree continue to grow after much of the soil washed away?

Probing Questions

  • What does the tree need to grow?
  • Where can plants get the materials they need to grow?
  • How can a tree respond to flooding?

Classroom Suggestions

Students could:

  • Individually complete a notice and wonder chart about the photograph then start a class chart to collect observations and questions.
  • Observe trees and plants around school and home, then share all of the places they find them growing.
  • Reviewing the needs of plants set up experiments where they compare the growth of plants under different conditions. Observe their plants over several days/weeks.
  • Observe their experiments then analyze and present data defending their arguments of what plants need to grow with evidence.
  • Have a debate around what need(s) of plants is necessary for growth providing evidence to support arguments.
  • Investigate how flooding impacts plants and animals by visiting or viewing photographs/videos of areas after flooding.
