Emerald Ash Borer Tagged Trees

These images show a tree with an Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) tag and the damage the emerald ash borer can do to a tree. These ash trees have been tagged to show they were treated to prevent damage from the Emerald Ash Borer. Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive species that attacks ash trees. The adult beetle causes little damage, but the larva is very destructive and is responsible for attacking healthy ash trees. When trees have an Emerald Ash Borer infestation they likely have to be cut down. There have been thousands of ash trees cut down in Iowa for this reason. Ash trees thrive in Iowa and provide shade and beauty for homes and parks. Right now city arborists and parks departments across Iowa are working on solutions to this Emerald Ash Borer problem.

Driving Question

  • Why is Emerald Ash Borer a problem in Iowa?

Probing Questions

  • Why is the Emerald Ash Borer not a problem in Asia, but it is here?
  • When several trees die, or are cut down, how does that impact the other plants and animals in that community?
  • What are the benefits of using insecticides on ash trees? What are the downsides?
  • How can humans help when there’s a change that occurs in a habitat?

Classroom Suggestions

Students could:

  • Create a model demonstrating where the Emerald Ash Borer impacts trees.
  • Discuss how a change in our environment, like the accidental introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, impacts Iowa.
  • Think about other changes that could impact their community (drought, colder or warmer temperatures throughout the year, flooding, etc) and compile a class chart.
  • Invite someone in from DNR or the parks department to share what they are doing to treat and prevent Emerald Ash Borer.
  • Have students write a letter to a community leader about what they think is the best solution for an Emerald Ash Borer infestation. Support with evidence.
  • Read about the impact the Emerald Ash Borer has on firewood. Write a claim about whether or not Iowa should have limits on transporting firewood, supporting their argument with evidence.
